Minutes of Recent Meetings

Below are the minutes of the Spring 2000 Business Meeting.

STATE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION - MATHEMATICS ASSOCIATION

BUSINESS MEETING

April 29, 2000

A Business Meeting of SSHEMA was called to order on April 29, 2000 at Noon.

The minutes of the 1999 Meeting were distributed.  Steve Gendler moved to approve the minutes and Marc Sylvester seconded. The minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report

  1. It was announced that there is about $1000 in the SSHE-MA account.
  2. Twelve institutions received the notices for the  $100 dues.

Vice-Chair's Report

  1. Cliff Johnston has been looking at a possible MathSciNet experiment restricted first to West Chester and Sippensburg.  Also, MathSciNet could come via PALCI.
  2. The new SSHEMA List-serve is up, running, and seems to be working fine.  We still need a list of e-mail addresses, by next fall, of faculty of each department to ask them to join the list-serve The SSHEMA List-serve will be very helpful to advertise for our conference.
  3. It was proposed that the name of our web address be changed to www.sshema.org; maybe it should be www.sshemapa.org.  Cliff Johnston will follow on that.

The Proceedings of SSHEMA

The Proceedings were discussed and it was decided that they should be given to the authors in a bounded volume and also be published in the web.  Authors would be asked to give their papers in Word or PDF.  Cheryl Olsen will write directions on how to convert the Proceedings.

PCTM Affiliation

The next PCTM meeting is in Pittsburgh in March.  Our organization is affiliated with PCTM, and we need a representative who will attend the appropriate PCTM meetings.

SSHEMA Conference

The last SSHEMA Conference at Clarion was well attended and there were several students’ talks.  The 1999 Conference at Shippensburg broke even.  Clarion seems to have done well and expects to at least break even.  A possible change in the schedule of the conference was discussed - perhaps the fall semester might give better attendance.  Another discussed idea was to have joint meetings with other organizations such as local MAA conference and EPADEL.

Other Business

In Other Business, the possibility of raising the dues was brought up.  Carol Rehn, Elaine Carbone, and Marc Seeber were nominated to be the organizers of the next conference.  Johnston/Gendler moved to accept these nominations.  The nominations were accepted.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
